Do you have “Christian Fatigue Syndrome?”
Are you tired of helping other people enjoy God while wondering if you’ll ever enjoy him again?
Do you feel like you’re on a spiritual treadmill?
Does God feel academic, cognitive and sterile rather than personal, intimate and close?
(I would have said yes to all of these things in January 2015)
Read these 4 books. I hope and pray they have the same impact on your life and relationship with God that they have had on mine: (The two Nouwen books take less than 2 hours to read)

Nouwen is great for us reformed types who lose some beauty in our lofty theology. Dallas Willard can be a little edgy but he has been an inspiration to literally love the Lord and walk with Him.
Does Nouwen differ greatly from Thomas Merton? I know little about these authors or their works but believe they are from the contemplative end of Catholicism. How would they compare with Andrew Murray?
Noah! I’m so happy to hear this testimony of breakthrough in your life, and to see you recommending books that, well, I wouldn’t expect you to! 🙂 Absolutely, we are meant to walk WITH God, not just work FOR Him.
So, my question is this: Why THESE books? I feel like the list of books to encourage people in their personal spiritual renewal could be much longer and more diverse…. so, I’m just curious. Is it because these are books that you are most familiar with?
Thanks for your posts… always relevant and thought provoking!
Haha, yes God has been good to stretch me behind my small evangelical cocoon in my reading recently! The primary purposes for these books is because they have the common theme of soul transformation / knowing God. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means, just ones I have read recently that have produced rapid growth in me. I didn’t want to give a long list where people wouldn’t know where to start. I know no one is going to try reading all 10 books in a list and they might not try any, but I thought 4 was a doable number to tackle all at once, especially since the Nouwen books are so short.
Thanks for asking!
