Day 1 – Read Hebrews 3
The “therefore” in verse 1 is connecting the truth that Jesus can help us when we are tempted, with the truth that we need to fix our thoughts on Jesus. Chapter 1 showed how Jesus is higher than the angels, now chapter 3 is showing how he is higher than Moses. This was also to show that Jesus’ covenant of grace is higher than Moses’ covenant of Law. V.7-11 is referring to how the ancient Israelites under Moses rejected God and therefore couldn’t enter the Promise Land. V.12 and 14-19 tell us not to deliberately reject God the way they did (all throughout the Old Testament), and v.13 tells us the way to make sure we stay strong in this: to encourage one another daily in our walks! Take time today to fix your thoughts on Jesus and also encourage another brother or sister in Christ to do the same!
Day 2 – Read Hebrews 4
This whole chapter has to do with the fact that the Israelites were unable to enter the Promised Land because of their deliberate rejection of God while they were under Moses. Verse 8 then talks about how even after entering the Promised Land under Joshua, this was still pointing toward an ultimate rest in Jesus. He is telling the Hebrew audience to not miss this ultimate rest in Jesus that the entire Old Testament is pointing toward! If you are a follower of Jesus, you have this rest! It is the rest from needing to measure up to God and the rest from the punishment our sins deserve. Take time to enjoy the rest and freedom that gives you and praise God because of it!
Day 3 – Read Deuteronomy 1:19-46
Key in on v.21 – God promises the people he will give them this land and tells them not to be afraid. This is a sad chapter in God’s people’s history, the day they rejected God’s promise and as a result, had to wander for 40 years in the wilderness while an entire generation died off.
Day 4 – Read Psalm 62 & 116
Notice how the Psalmists find their rest in the salvation they have in God, even in spite of trying circumstances? Take time to rest in God today, knowing he has saved you. Thank him for his abundant grace.
Day 5 – Read Matthew 11:25-30; Romans 8:1-4
Do you feel the rest Jesus speaks of here that is found in him? If not, think about what you are attempting to add to Jesus to find rest. Remember that “Jesus + Nothing = Everything” and that Jesus is the only one we can truly find rest in as he has completely finished the work needed to make you complete and righteous and accepted by God.
